The Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), 1st Surface Unit, JS SHIRANUI made a port call at Koror, the Republic of Palau and conducted a Japan-Palau goodwill exercise.

From July 26 to 27, the 1st Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific deployment 2023 (IPD23), JS SHIRANUI made a port call at Koror, the Republic of Palau and conducted various goodwill exchange events, including an invitation of the Vice President Uduch Sengebau Senior, Vice Speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives, and other senior government officials to its ship to deepen friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Palau.
After the port visit, the unit conducted a Japan-Palau goodwill exercise with a Palau’s patrol vessel, PSS Kedam in waters surrounding Palau, improved its tactical capabilities, and promoted friendship and mutual understanding with the Republic of Palau DMSFWP. This vessel was provided by Japan to strengthen Palau’s security capabilities, and is a symbol of the friendship between Japan and Palau.
The Commander of the First Surface Unit of the IPD23, Commander of Escort Flotilla 1, Rear Admiral NISHIYAMA Takahiro said, “I am very pleased that we deepened friendship through the goodwill exercise. The JMSDF will continue to respond to security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region through conversation and cooperation with Pacific Island nations in order to realize a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”
The Self Defense Fleet maintains readiness, puts all its efforts to defend Japan by enhancing the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, and contributes to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region for the realization of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies.
