The First Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), JS IZUMO conducted a bilateral goodwill exercise with the Independent State of Papua New Guinea Defense Force(PNGDF), HMPNGS FRANCIS AGWI.

During 7-11 July, the First Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), JS IZUMO made a port call at Port Moresby, Independent State of Papua New Guinea. After visiting, JS IZUMO conducted a bilateral goodwill exercise with the Independent State of Papua New Guinea Defense Force (PNGDF), HMPNGS FRANCIS AGWI.
The Commanding Officer of JS IZUMO, Captain JOU Takemasa said, “During our port call at Port Moresby, we held various exchanging events such as a courtesy call on the Commander of the PNGDF and an invitation of PNGDF’s officers and sailors to our ship. Through these events and the exercise, we strengthened the friendship and mutual understanding with the PNGDF and improved our tactical capabilities. The JMSDF emphasizes our commitment to this region and contributes to dialogue and cooperation with pacific island countries in order to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, while dealing with regional security issues”
The Self-Defense Fleet maintains readiness and contributes to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, not only for the defense of Japan but also for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies.
