The Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), 1st Surface Units made a port call at Cam Ranh, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

During 20-23 June, JS IZUMO and JS SAMIDARE from the First Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23) made a port call at Cam Ranh, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and held various exchange programs. In addition, the IPD23 unit conducted a bilateral goodwill exercise with a Vietnamese frigate HQ LY THAI TO and deepened mutual understanding and friendship with the Vietnam People’s Navy.
The Commander of the First Surface Unit of the IPD23, Commander of Escort Flotilla 1, Rear Admiral NISHIYAMA Takahiro said, “This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam as well as the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. I am very pleased we got the opportunity to visit Vietnam, which is an important partner to realize a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ in this memorable year. The JMSDF will further enhance cooperation with the Vietnam People’s Navy in order to maintain and strengthen peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region including the South China Sea.”
The Self-Defense Fleet maintains readiness and contributes to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region and the international community in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies, not only for the defense of Japan, but also for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” and a security environment that does not tolerate any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force.
