The Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23) unit, JS SHIRANUI and P-1 conducted a multilateral exercise “Noble Wolf” with the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Navy, and the Royal Canadian Navy.

From 3-6 June, the First Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23) unit, JS SHIRANUI and P-1 patrol aircraft conducted a multilateral exercise “Noble Wolf” with the U.S. Navy USS CHUNG HOON and P-8A patrol aircraft, the Royal Australian Navy HMAS ANZAC, and the Royal Canadian Navy HMCS MONTREAL and HMCS ASTERIX in the East China Sea.
This exercise was conducted as a part of Large-Scale Global Exercise 2023 (LSGE23) which was planned by the U.S. to strengthen coordination with its allied and partner nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Commanding Officer of JS SHIRANUI, Commander MINAMI Kazuhiro said, “Through this practical exercise including anti-surface warfare training, we improved our tactical capabilities and strengthened cooperation with the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Navy, and the Royal Canadian Navy. Each unit of the JMSDF works closely in peacetime in various waters with allied and like-minded navies including the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Navy, and the Royal Canadian Navy.”
The Self-Defense Fleet maintains readiness and contributes to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region and the international community, not only for the defense of Japan but also for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” security environment that does not tolerate any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies.
