On April 20, the Third Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), JS KUMANO departed from Yokosuka Base.
On the departure, Commander in Chief, Self Defense Fleet, Vice Admiral SAITO Akira said, "This deployment started in 2017 to realize rules-based maritime order and a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.” This is the 7th deployment this year. The purpose of the deployment is to improve tactical capabilities and strengthen cooperation with other navies through various exercises, and eventually contribute to the regional peace and security. It is very significant in terms of showing our strong will to the world to contribute to the prosperity of the international community. We are also required more than before to show our strong determination not to accept any attempts to change the status quo by force and our strong ties with like-minded nations. It is the first and solo overseas deployment of our FFM (Multi Purpose Frigate) since it was commissioned. I hope that each and every one of you will devote your energy to accomplishing the mission. "
In addition, the Commanding Officer of JS KUMANO, Commander SAKURAI Atsushi said, "We are going to visit Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore during the deployment. We will conduct various combined exercises with each navy using the latest model of FFM and show our engagement in cooperation with other navies for the realization of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. We will put all our efforts into this deployment."
The Self-Defense Fleet maintains readiness and contributes to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, not only for the defense of Japan but also for the realization of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific" in cooperation with allied and friendly navies. "
