From March 23 to 26, JS ISE conducted bilateral exercise with U.S. Navy Carrier Strike Group NIMIZ, JGSDF Western Army in the sea and airspace surrounding the Pacific Ocean to the East China Sea.
The Commander of Escort Division 6 CAPT YOKOYAMA Shigeki, who served as the Japanese commander for the exercise, said, “Through the exercise, the JMSDF has improved its tactical capabilities, joint capabilities with JGSDF and interoperability with U.S. navy. In this way, the JMSDF and the U.S. Navy work closely to enhance the deterrence and response capabilities to respond swiftly to any contingency”, the Commander of Escort Division 6 CAPT YOKOYAMA Shigeki, who served as the Japanese commander for the exercise, said.
Rear Adm. Christopher Sweeney, commander, Carrier Strike Group 11 said, “Our partners in the Japan Self Defense Force are incredibly important Allies, and it is essential that we continue to integrate and train together to expand interoperability and strengthen our capabilities. This Alliance has never been stronger or more important as we remain resolute to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows.”
The Self-Defense Fleet maintains maximum readiness and contributes to the peace and the stability of the Indo-Pacific region and the international environment in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies. For the defense of Japan and the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, there can be no unilateral changes to the status quo by force.
