Welcome from the Superintendent
Rear Admiral Takanobu Minami, Superintendent, Maritime Officer Candidate School
I am Rear Admiral Minami. I am assigned as the Superintendent of the Maritime Officer Candidate School (MOCS) on August 1, 2018. I am very honored, as well as somewhat anxious, to assume command of MOCS, on which carries the history and traditions we have inherited from the Imperial Naval Academy.
MOCS graduates are expected to excel as leaders in command of future Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) units and squadrons. As a first step, our students master the basics necessary to become maritime Officers here at MOCS. The sea can be calm and sometimes rough. As a strong leader who will take command at sea, it is necessary to have abilities such as mental and physical toughness, as well as flexibility to respond to changes in situations and internationality to be active in the world community.
Etajima is the origin of JMSDF Officers and also their spiritual home. The Imperial Naval Academy trained naval cadets for 57 years on Etajima, on the other hand, MOCS has reached its 61st year. So, the history of MOCS now exceeds that of the Imperial Naval Academy. We would like to work hard to foster Naval Officers suitable to modern times, while inheriting good traditions from the Imperial Navy.
Thank you very much for your continued support and cooperation.
