Anti-piracy operations
The seas off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden form important sea lines of communication linking Asia and Europe. Every year, around 20,000 ships pass through, including approximately 2,000 vessels related to Japan. The important ocean area of the Gulf of Aden has in recent years seen the expansion of harm caused by pirates. Read about the anti-piracy operations conducted by air and sea units of the JMSDF.

After the occurrence of large-scale flood damage in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in July 2010, Japan's Minister of Defense issued an order on August 20th for international disaster relief operations to be implemented by Japan Self-Defense Force units. Read about these aid activities here.

Near Seas Training Cruise

On January 17th, 2013, ceremonies for founding of the new offices of the Underwater Medical Center and the Yokosuka Medical Education Division were held in Taura, Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Events for the 60th MSDF Founding Anniversary
On April 26th, 1952 the Maritime Guard, the antecedents to the MSDF, were established at Taura, Yokosuka City’s former Maritime Ordinance School (the current MSDF 2nd Service School), making 2012 the 60th anniversary of this founding. On April 26th, 2012, at the 2nd Service School, about 550 officers and OBs serving under the MSDF including Chiefs of Staff MSDF, and representatives of the United States Navy wereattended the 60th anniversary ceremonies.
