The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey visited Japan 25-26 April 2013 and met with the Japan Self Defense Force Chief of the Joint Staff, General Shigeru Iwasaki in Tokyo on 26 April to discuss the security environment in the Asia-Pacific region and strengthening the US-Japan Alliance. The Generals reaffirmed the vital nature of the US-Japan Alliance for the security of both countries as well as for the peace, stability, and economic prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region. |
General Dempsey and General Iwasaki agreed that US forces and the Japan Self Defense Forces will continue to improve the effectiveness of information sharing and bilateral operations to deal effectively with common security challenges, while maintaining a strong defense cooperation bond between the two long-time allies.
The Generals affirmed that U.S. forces and Self Defense Forces cooperate closely in order to deal with threats of ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities of the DPRK. They also share recognition that the growth of China’s military power must be accompanied by greater clarity in its strategic intentions to avoid causing friction and misunderstandings in the region.
