| In June 1951, Central Band began as a band for the National Police Reserve, the antecedent to the present Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF). Having undergone many changes since then, the Band is now performing throughout the country as the principal representative wind orchestra of Japan. The Central Band, as the military band under the direct control of the Minister of Defense, frequently takes part in national functions, which include performances welcoming national guests to the State Guest-House. Central Band also plays an important role in the success of official functions, such as musical performances for the enthronement ceremony of the incumbent Emperor, the wedding parade for the Crown Prince, the former Emperorfs and Empressf funeral, and brilliant fanfares for the Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Sapporo, and Nagano, the FIFA World Cup cosponsored by Japan and Korea, and the international Expo. In 2002 and 2004, Central Band participated in the international tattoo held in Korea to win popularity from the local nationals. In addition, Central Band participates in various musical activities, such as regular concerts held in the metropolitan area three times a year, chamber music concerts, promenade concerts in office building zones, and concert tours all over the country. The Central Band also has a comprehensive education department where musical knowledge and skills are imparted to JGSDF band members. |
