Implementation of Airlift Operations by SDF Units for affected persons by the Large-Scale Earthquake Disaster in the Republic of Haiti
January 18, 2010
Ministry of Defense
On January 18, 2010, in regard to the large-scale earthquake in the Republic of Haiti, the Minister for Foreign Affairs consulted with the Minister of Defense and requested the cooperation of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) in conducting international disaster relief activities.
Specifically, it will involve an airlift service for affected persons who wish to be transported from Haiti to the United States (US), and will be provided as a rescue operation within the framework of international disaster relief operations.
In response to the above consultation, the MOD decided on January 17, local time, to transport affected persons to the US by a C-130H transportation aircraft on its way back from transporting the Japan Disaster Relief Team (JDRT). The MOD, therefore, has issued an order to partially change the order for the SDF operation concerning the airlift service for international disaster relief activities.
The airlift operation is scheduled to be conducted in the afternoon of January 17, local time, the early morning of January 18, Japan time.
