Field Investigation in Countries around the Gulf of Aden

1. Regarding measures against piracy off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden, Minister of Defense Hamada issued instructions and an order to the Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff and other officers concerned on January 28, to carry out necessary actions including field investigation for preparation for maritime security operations which may be ordered as an emergency measure for the time being.

2. The Ministry of Defense will conduct the following field investigation for the purpose of gathering technical and specialized information necessary to conduct reviews on bases of operation for vessels and patrol aircraft as well as operational guidelines when an order for maritime security operations is issued.

(1) Period of investigation:
February 8 (Sunday) to February 20 (Friday) (13 days)

(2) Countries to be visited:
1. Yemen
2. Djibouti
3. Oman
4. Bahrain

(3) Members of the Investigation Team
12 MOD and SDF personnel headed by Captain Takanobu Minami (MSDF), Deputy Head, 1st Operations Division of the Joint Staff
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will accompany them.

3. Based on the result of this field investigation, the MSDF will proceed with its reviews on bases of operation for vessels and patrol aircraft as well as operational guidelines when an order for maritime security operations is issued.
