Graduation Ceremony of the National Defense Medical College, the National Defense Academy and the JGSDF High Technical School

On March 3rd, a graduation ceremony of the National Defense Medical College (NDMC) was held for graduates of the Division of Medicine and the Division of Nursing, NDMC, with attendance of Minister Onodera.

On March 18th, a graduation ceremony of the National Defense Academy (NDA) was held for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Following the addresses by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Minister Onodera and the President of the NDA, and a congratulatory speech by a representative of honored guests, undergraduate students departed from the NDA with the traditional hat toss at the end of ceremony.

Additionally, on March 21st, a graduation ceremony of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) High Technical School was held, with attendance of Minister Onodera.

The delivery and commission ceremonies for DD Asahi, SS Seiryu, MSO Hirado, and ASR Chiyoda took place on March 7th, 12th, 16th and 20th, respectively.

Pacific Partnership 2018

Pacific Partnership 2018

Pacific Partnership 2018 began on March 20th. The MOD/Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) has participated in activities in the following countries so far: Micronesia (March 20th to April 2nd), Palau (April 3rd to 16th) and Indonesia (April 3rd and 4th).

Pacific Partnership, which started in 2006, is an initiative organized by the U.S. Forces. Naval vessels mainly from the U.S. Navy visit the Asia-Pacific region to provide medical assistance, to conduct civil engineering, and to engage in cultural exchanges. Pacific Partnership also strengthens collaboration with the participating countries and facilitates international disaster relief activities through cooperation with the government, military, international organizations, and NGOs.

A total of four JSDF medical personnel and a coordination officer have been dispatched to Micronesia and Palau to engage in medical and cultural exchange activities.

In Indonesia, the MOD co-organized a Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Seminar with the U.S. and Indonesia. During the seminar, Maj. Miyamoto from the JGSDF introduced her own experience as well as the JGSDF’s experience in this area including during the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Japan-U.S. Joint Cruising Exercise

Japan-U.S. Joint Cruising Exercise

From March 11th to 23rd, the JMSDF conducted a joint cruising exercise with the U.S. Navy in the waters from the northern area of the South China Sea to the sea around Okinawa. The aim of this exercise was to imorove its tactical skills and Japan-U.S. joint response capabilities with a view to further enhancing deterrence and response capabilities under the Japan-U.S. Alliance. The JMSDF DDH Ise and U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and others joined the exercise.

The MOD seeks to further enhance Japan-U.S. defense cooperation through such exercises to ensure peace and stability of Japan and the region.

Japan-Australia Defence Industry Forum

Japan-Australia Defence Industry Forum

On March 6th, the Japan-Australia Public-Private Defence Industry Forum was jointly held for the first time by the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) and the Department of Defence of Australia.

In the forum, both goverments shared information with participating companies on systems and structures surrounding defense industries of their countries.

It also featured presentations given by the companies on products and technologies related to i) peace operations, ii) maritime and aviation security and iii) humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, thereby encouraging industries from two countries to seek opportunities for cooperation in these three domains.
