First Parachute Drop Training 2018 of the JGSDF 1st Airborne Brigade

First Parachute Drop Training 2018 of the JGSDF 1st Airborne Brigade

On January 12th, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) 1st Airborne Brigade, the only paratroop unit in Japan, conducted its ”First Parachute Drop Training” of this year at Narashino Training Area in Chiba Prefecture.

As approx. 5,300 people including Defense Minister Onodera, MOD/JSDF officials and citizens watched the training, JSDF personnel parachuted one after another and demonstrated firing of blank arms on ground and from helicopters.

In addition to approx. 300 JGSDF and JASDF personnel and approx. 80 personnel from the U.S. Army in Okinawa and Alaska took part in the training.

After the training, Minister Onodera stated that the inspection of the training was extremely fruitful, because he reaffirmed that today’s strong relationship between JSDF and the U.S. Forces has been formed through a series of such events that take place under close cooperation between Japan and the U.S.

The "First Parachute Drop" Training started as an annual new year event in 1969, wishing for the safety of the parachute drop training throughout the year. The event has been open to the public since 1974 to foster understanding of and confidence in the unit.
