The Minister of Defense Receives a Courtesy Call from Admiral Harry B. Harris, Commander of the United States Pacific Command

On November 15th, Minister of Defense Onodera received a courtesy call from Admiral Harris, Commander of the United States Pacific Command. At the meeting, they exchanged opinions on the situation of North Korea and coordinated on response to North Korea that was agreed at the recent Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting.

Minister Onodera stated that recent joint exercise conducted by the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) and three U.S. carrier strike groups was a meaningful way to show the resolution of Japan and U.S. in a tangible way while it was agreed with the U.S. Secretary of Defense Mattis to keep exerting pressure on North Korea.

He also confirmed that he will closely cooperate with Admiral Harris who is in charge of the region to realize free and open Indo-Pacific region while paying close attention to the situation of the East and South China Seas. He stated that he will continue capacity building assistance for Southeast Asian countries.

Lastly, he requested the U.S. side to pay consideration to local community, including safety operation in order to ensure stable stationing of the U.S. Forces in Japan.

On November 14th, Minister Onodera received a courtesy call from General Vincent K. Brooks, Commander, UN Command/Combined Forces Command/ U.S. Forces Korea. At the meeting, they exchanged opinions on the situation of North Korea and coordinated on response to North Korea that was agreed at the recent Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting.

Minister Onodera stated that recent joint exercise conducted by the JSDF and three U.S. carrier strike groups was a meaningful way to show the resolution of Japan and U.S. in a tangible way while it was agreed between the summits of Japan and U.S., and with U.S. Secretary of Defense Mattis to keep pressuring North Korea.

Also, it was confirmed that both sides will continue to closely cooperate on responding to North Korea.
