Japan-Jordan Defence Ministerial Meeting

On July 13th, Minister of Defense Inada held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Hani Al-Mulki, Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, during his visit to Japan. During the meeting, both parties discussed Japan-Jordan defense cooperation and exchanges as well as the regional situation.

Both ministers noted the active nature of exchanges between Japan and Jordan at the top leadership level and welcomed developments in bilateral relations. They also praised the signing of a memorandum on defense cooperation and exchanges upon the visit of His Majesty King Abdullah to Japan in October 2016 as a foundation for furthering defense exchanges and cooperation between Japan and Jordan.

Both ministers confirmed the start of initiatives for promoting mutual understanding between the two countries, including defense policy dialogue and mutual visits by the Chief of Staff of Joint Staff. They also stated their expectations for advancements in discussions on detailed defense cooperation in the future, taking into account Japan’s dispatch of a defense attaché to Jordan since March 2017.

With regard to the regional situation, Minister of Defense Inada spoke about the security environment in East Asia, including the situations in North Korea as well as the South China Sea and East China Sea, while Prime Minister and Defence Minister Al-Mulki talked about the situation in the Middle East, including efforts against ISIL. Both ministers spoke in detail about these matters and shared their understanding of the situations.
