On June 4th, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Kobayashi had a “Round Table Talk” in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, with local residents under the theme of “Forging Trust between the JSDF and the Local Communities ~focusing on responses to the Kumamoto Earthquake~.” This time marked the seventh meeting of its kind for the MOD. “Round Table Talk” is an opportunity for ministers, state ministers, and parliamentary vice-ministers to sit in a circle and hold a close discussion with locals to listen to what they have to say in detail and in turn explain the government’s vital policies to them.

Local residents expressed their opinions. They said that the central and local governments need to have detailed innovative ways for those who are vulnerable to disasters. Concerning disaster prevention, they also expressed that it is important to conduct training on daily basis and prepare for disasters. It was a valuable opportunity for the MOD to directly talk to people living in this region in order to utilize for future policies.
