Bon Voyage - JMSDF Ship Izumo

Let’s take a closer look at the activities carried out by the JMSDF ship Izumo in the first half of May. On May 1st, Izumo departed Japan to participate in an international maritime review hosted by the Republic of Singapore Navy scheduled for May 15th.

From May 7th to 10th, Izumo conducted a joint cruising exercise with the U.S. Navy in the South China Sea. Izumo and JMSDF ship Sazanami, which was also on its way to the same maritime review, took part in the exercise from the JMSDF side, while the guided missile destroyers USS Sterett and USS Dewey participated from the U.S. Navy side.

On May 12th, Izumo and Sazanami took part in multilateral maritime exercises held in conjunction with the international maritime review. During the exercises, Izumo and Sazanami met up with RSS Stalwart of the Republic of Singapore Navy as well as naval vessels from Canada, France, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, the U.S. and Vietnam.

On May 15th, Izumo and Sazanami participated in the international maritime review hosted by the Republic of Singapore Navy, which was inspected by Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam. The purpose of the review was to build mutual understanding and friendship among participating countries as well as develop global awareness among dispatched personnel.

From May 20th to 25th, Izumo and Sazanami took part in Pacific Partnership 2017 activities in Cam Ranh, Vietnam and held a seminar on search and rescue.
