The SDF took part in the Cobra Gold 17, the multilateral joint training exercise that took place in Thailand from January 24th to February 24th. Approx. 130 personnel from the SDF, including the GSDF, MSDF, ASDF, the Joint Staff Office and other organization, participated.

Nine countries, Japan, Thailand, the U.S., Indonesia, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, India, and China, joined in this year’s Cobra Gold. Of the various training exercises that took place, the SDF participated in the command post exercise (CPX) related to counter-piracy and cooperation and support activities for the armed forces of foreign countries, field training on measures to rescue Japanese nationals overseas, and humanitarian/civilian assistance activities pertaining to medical and construction to improve necessary capabilities for executing tasks as well as promote understanding and reinforce trusting relationships between the countries involved.

Since taking part in Cobra Gold’s CPX for the first time in 2005, the SDF has expanded its scope of participating exercise from CPX to such as humanitarian/civilian assistance activity and training on measures to transportation Japanese nationals overseas. This year marked the 13th time participation from the SDF.
