On January 8th, the GSDF 1st Airborne Brigade, the only paratroop unit in Japan, conducted its first drop drill of this year at Narashino Training Area in Chiba Prefecture.

In the drill with a large audience of approx. 10,000 people including MOD/SDF officials starting with State Minister of Defense Kenji Wakamiya and citizens, the SDF personnel parachuted one after another, demonstrating mock artillery on the ground and from helicopters for one hour and half.

In addition to approx. 300 personnel from the GSDF and ASDF, 10 personnel from the U.S. Army special forces that stationed in Okinawa took part in the drill at this time.

In 1969, the 1st Airborne Brigade commenced this annual new year event as an event only for MOD/SDF officials, wishing for the safety of the drop training throughout the year. This annual event has been open to the public since 1974.
