SDF Marching Festival 2016

With energetic music and mellow songs echoing throughout autumn-colored Tokyo, the SDF Marching Festival 2016 took place at the Nippon Budokan hall for three days from November 11th to 13th. The festival is the SDF’s largest music event held annually around November as part of the SDF Day commemoration. This year, the U.S. Army Japan Band, the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force Band, and the Indian Army Band participated in the Festival as guest bands.

The Festival this year has been memorable with the theme “Power of the Sound ~Powerful Sound for Defense~.” It represents the SDF’s strength through dynamism of sound and music and power of joint forces of the GSDF, MSDF, and ASDF. In addition, the theme expresses the Japan-U.S. alliance and strong relationships with friendly countries.

The Festival consisted of five chapters: “Spring Sound ~sound of the beginning~,” “Summer Sound ~hot and active sound~,” “Autumn Sound ~sound of movement and creation~,” “Winter Sound ~furious and savage sound~,” and “Spring Sound ~sound of departure~.” Splendid harmony was delivered by the GSDF Central Band, the MSDF Tokyo Band, the ASDF Central Band, and the GSDF Eastern and Western Army Bands as well as special guest bands such as the U.S. Army Japan Band and the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force Band. The Indian Army Band also took part, and it was their second time to participate in the SDF Marching Festival. Along with the band performances, drill performance by the GSDF 302nd Military Police Company, fancy drill by the National Defense Academy, and taiko drum performance by the SDF Japanese Drum Teams fascinated audiences with its unity and powerfulness.

At the end of the Festival, Pines of Rome – the Pines of the Appian Way was spectacularly performed by all the bands. Following that, the event culminated when a song “Farewell for Today” was sung by all the bands and audiences at hall as one. Audiences left the venue, and they were totally fascinated and utterly impatient for the next year’s marching festival.
