Rollout Ceremony for the ASDF’s First F-35A

On September 23rd, State Minister of Defense Wakamiya attended the rollout ceremony for the ASDF’s first F-35A held at Lockheed Martin’s production facility in Fort Worth, Texas, the U.S.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Wakamiya, State Minister of Defense, Gen. Sugiyama, Chief of Air Staff, Dr. Watanabe, Commissioner, Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency, and senior executives from Japanese companies from the Japan side. From the U.S. side, attendees included Mr. Kendall, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, Gen. O'Shaughnessy, Commander of the Pacific Air Forces, Ms. Hewson, Chairman, President, and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Mr. Carvalho, Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, among others.

State Minister of Defense Wakamiya stated the following points during his speech at the ceremony.

  • As the security environment surrounding Japan has become increasingly severe, the acquisition of the excellent fighter aircraft is of great significance to the defense of Japan.
  • The introduction of F-35A to Japan is a symbol of the enhancement of the Japan-U.S. alliance, including the fact that regional Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul and Upgrade Capability in the Asia-Pacific region for F-35s will be established in Japan.
  • This rollout ceremony is the historic first step for a new partnership between Japan and United States, where the cooperation between the two countries will be deepened.
