The Troop Review FY2016

The Troop Review, one of the anniversaries of the foundation of the SDF, was held on October 23, 2016 at GSDF Asaka Exercise Area. The review celebrates the foundation of the SDF, aiming to raise the sprits and self-consciousness of the SDF personnel, which leads to fostering the eminent tradition of the SDF, and will eventually help to gain trust and understandings from Japanese people.

Prime Minister Abe, the reviewer of the ceremony attended the parade with Minister of Defense Inada and Chief of Ground Staff Okabe as approx. 4000 personnel from GSDF, MASF, and ASDF marched on with approx. 280 vehicles, and approx. 50 aircraft. Also, the U.S. Forces conducted celebration parade and flight; MV-22 Ospreys flew over.

Port Call at Timor-Leste by the MSDF Destroyer Fuyuduki

The MSDF destroyer Fuyuduki made a port call at Dili, Timor-Leste, from September 26th to 28th. The Fuyuduki visited Dili on the way back to Japan after participating in KAKADU 2016, which was multinational maritime joint exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Navy and held from September 12th to 24th in the waters around Darwin, Australia.

Status of Scrambles through the First Half of FY2016

Status of Scrambles through the First Half of FY2016

The ASDF scrambled 594 times during the first half of FY2016, which marked a significant increase of 251 times compared to the same period of the previous year. The breakdown of scrambles by countries and regions was about 69% against Chinese aircraft, about 30% against Russian aircraft, and 1% against other aircraft although the countries and regions include supposition.

Characteristics of Responses through the First Half of FY2016

The ASDF scrambled 407 times against Chinese aircraft in total, an increase of 176 times compared to the same period of the previous year. It is the highest number since 2001, in which the MOD began publicizing the number of scrambles by countries and regions. Also, the MOD publicized nine cases as peculiar flights.

The ASDF scrambled 180 times against Russian aircraft in total, an increase of 72 times compared to the same period of the previous year. The MOD publicized five cases as peculiar flights. There was no case of airspace violation that should be made public during this period.

Scrambles against Chinese fighter aircraft and Russian bomber aircraft were outstanding in frequency compared to other types of aircraft of each country, although this includes estimation.

The period of this data is from April 1st, 2016, to September 30th, 2016.
