Defense Minister’s Visit to Djibouti

On August 15th, Defense Minister Inada traveled to Djibouti where she visited locally dispatched SDF personnel, had a meeting with President Guelleh and Minister of Defense Bahdon, and visited Camp Lemonnier of the U.S. Forces.

1.Visit to SDF Personnel Engaging in Counter-Piracy Activities

Defense Minister Inada received reports on the activities of each unit at the SDF base of the deployed air force and support group in Djibouti and toured the base’s facilities where she was briefed on their operation. She also boarded a P-3C to witness a monitoring mission in progress, during which she communicated with the deployed surface force on destroyers in the Gulf of Aden to check up on their mission.

Defense Minister Inada also met with junior SDF personnel including female personnel where she stated that she hoped all would complete their mission despite the difficult environment and return safely to Japan.

Defense Minister Inada expressed her appreciation for the Government of Djibouti’s cooperation in hosting the SDF’s counter-piracy unit. She also asked for the continued support of the Government of Djibouti regarding SDF activities from the base in Djibouti, using the example of transporting Japanese nationals out of South Sudan due to the deteriorating security situation in the capital Juba. President Guelleh stated he would like to continue providing support to Japan and praised Japan’s positive contributions to the international community, including through counter-piracy operations.

3.Japan-Djibouti Defense Ministerial Meeting with Minister of Defense Bahdon

Defense Minister Inada stated that she welcomed the rapid development of Japan-Djibouti relations since the start of the SDF’s counter-piracy operations and expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the Government of Djibouti to the SDF’s operations in the country. Minister of Defense Bahdon highly praised Japan’s cooperation, including its counter-piracy operations, and stated his hope that this cooperation would continue.

Also, Defense Minister Inada also stated that, at the request of the Djibouti side, the MOD is now preparing to dispatch GSDF officers in this fiscal year to provide assistance to the Djibouti military and conduct training for operation of equipment for disaster response.

4.Visit to Camp Lemonnier of the U.S. Forces

Minister of Defense Inada visited Camp Lemonnier of the U.S. Forces where she was briefed on the activities of the U.S. Forces in Djibouti and the situation concerning facility installations.
