RIMPAC 2016

RIMPAC 2016

The GSDF and MSDF took part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016, the international maritime exercise hosted by the U.S. Navy from June 30th to August 4th.

RIMPAC is hosted by the U.S. Navy and a multilateral exercise, aiming at improving the tactical combat skills of units from each participating country. This year, over 30 countries including observers joined the exercise. Since 1971, RIMPAC has been held almost every two years, with this year marking the 25th exercise. This is the second time for the GSDF to participate. The MSDF has taken part in RIMPAC since 1980, and it was the 19th time for the MSDF to take part in the exercise.

RIMPAC was implemented around waters and in airspace of Hawaiian Islands and the U.S. west coast. From the MSDF, destroyers Chokai and Hyuga were dispatched, while two P-3Cs took part in the exercise. Approx. 50 GSDF personnel from the Western Army Headquarters and Western Infantry Regiment participated in RIMPAC.

This exercise intended to improve SDF’s tactical combat skills as well as aimed to promote mutual understanding and strengthen trust relationship among participating countries.

During RIMPAC, the MSDF units participated in various tactical training, such as anti-submarine, surface-to-ship, surface-to-air, and anti-mine exercises, as well as training for counter-piracy and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The GSDF units carried out amphibious training together with the U.S. Marine Corps and others. GSDF staff officers were dispatched to command post for training of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

– Arctic Aurora –
FY2016 Field Training Exercise in the United States

The 15th IISS Asia Security Summit in Singapore – Shangri-La Dialogue –

From May 31st to June 16th, Arctic Aurora, the field training exercise with the U.S. Army, was conducted in the U.S. This is the second time for the SDF to participate in this exercise following the first one held last year.

Approx. 80 GSDF personnel from the 1st Airborne Brigade at Camp Narashino and approx. 120 personnel of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, from the U.S. Army Alaska took part in the exercise. The exercise was held at the Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson and neighboring training area in State of Alaska, the U.S.

This exercise aimed at mainly enhancing combat skills regarding airmobile operations and improving interoperability with airborne unit of the U.S. Army.
