Transport assistance using U.S. transport aircraft took place between April 18th and 23rd in which UC-35 transport aircraft, C-130 transport aircraft and MV-22 Osprey of the U.S. Forces were used to carry approx. 36 tons of food, water and other living assistance supplies to Minamiaso Village.

The main earthquake that hit early in the morning of April 16th cut off roads in the affected areas, making it impossible to deliver supplies by ground transportation. Also, affected persons living confined to evacuation centers necessitated the delivery of living assistance supplies as quickly as possible, which indicated that with limited time the need to further enhance air transport capability.

Amidst these forecasts, it was determined that the airborne transport assistance of the U.S. Forces in Japan could complement the airborne transport capacity of the SDF, and therefore, after the necessary coordination with the U.S. side, it was determined that U.S. transport aircraft, including MV-22 Osprey, would be used to aid the transport effort. The U.S. has the saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” In this sense, the support received from the U.S. Forces in Japan is extremely helpful and meaningful.
