The 4th International Mine Countermeasures Exercise Hosted by the United States

From April 4th to 26th, the MSDF participated in the 4th International Mine Countermeasures Exercise hosted by the U.S., which took place in Bahrain’s surrounding waters around the Arabian Peninsula.

It aimed at improving skills in minesweeping and diving. The exercise also intended to promote mutual understanding and strengthen trusting relationships between participating countries.

From the MSDF, minesweeper tender Uraga and minesweeper coastal Takashima were dispatched and approx. 180 personnel took part in the exercise. This exercise has been conducted since 2012, and Japan has constantly participated in it.

Maiden Flight of the X-2 (Advanced Technology Demonstrator)

Maiden Flight of the X-2 (Advanced Technology Demonstrator)

On April 22nd, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. reported that its X-2 (Advanced Technology Demonstrator) took to the skies from Prefectural Nagoya Airport and landed at ASDF Gifu Air Base, marking its maiden flight.

Date of maiden flight: April 22nd, 2016
Takeoff time: 8:47am (Prefectural Nagoya Airport)
Landing time: 9:13am (ASDF Gifu Air Base)

Details of flight: The X-2 took off and flew in the flight test range where checks were performed on its systems and later the aircraft landed. The results of the maiden flight were positive.

The 8th ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on HA/DR

The 8th ADMM-Plus Experts' Working Group on HA/DR

The 8th Meeting of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Experts’ Working Group (HA/DR EWG) under the framework of ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) was held in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, on May 10th. Japan serves as a co-chair for the HA/DR EWG with Lao PDR from 2014.

This 8th meeting marks the 5th time in which Japan has co-chaired the meeting. At this meeting, participants discussed the standard operating procedure (SOP) in order for assisting foreign forces to effectively conduct their disaster relief activities among other items.

The meeting was attended by ASEAN member states and ADMM-Plus countries including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia, and the U.S. as well as representatives from ASEAN Secretariat.
