Japan Self-Defense Forces Fleet Review 2015

On October 18th, the Fleet Review was held in Sagami Bay. This was one of the reviews that the GSDF, MSDF, and ASDF hold annually in rotation. This year's review marked the 28th iteration; it was the first time in three years since 2012.

The destroyer Kurama welcomed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe aboard as the Reviewing Officer. 42 vessels participated in the Review including Izumo, which is the largest MSDF vessel commissioned in last March. Six vessels from Australia, France, India, the Republic of Korea, and the U.S. took part in it and conducted celebratory cruise. In addition, 37 aircraft from the SDF and the U.S. forces flew over.

On the day of the Fleet Review,Kurama departed from Yokosuka and headed for Sagami Bay, in which the Fleet Review would take place. The vessel carried Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, Minister of Defense Gen Nakatani (Director of Fleet Review), State Minister of Defense Kenji Wakamiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Satoshi Fujimaru, Administrative Vice-Minister of Defense Tetsuro Kuroe, as well as Chief of Joint Staff, ADM Katsutoshi Kawano, Chief of Maritime Staff, ADM Tomohisa Takei (Officer in Command), Chief of Ground Staff, GEN Kiyofumi Iwata, and Chief of Air Staff, GEN Harukazu Saitoh , and other invited guests. Thereafter, MCH-101 helicopter carrying Prime Minister Abe landed on Kurama, which had passed through the Uraga Channel in Tokyo Bay.

He then received a salute and observed the Guard of Honor. The Fleet Review commenced at noon with the appearance of the surface group in review consisting of 21 vessels led by the state-of-the-art Aegis-equipped destroyer Atago, and 6 vessels from other countries which was conducting celebratory cruise.

At the Fleet Review, the Reviewing and the Demonstration were implemented. The Review was consisted of the surface group in review, Celebratory Cruise Unit, and the air group in review.
