Dawn Blitz 2015

From August 31st to September 9th, the Dawn Blitz 2015 field training exercise was held in California, the U.S. This is the second time for the SDF to participate in this exercise following the one held in 2013. This exercise aimed at maintaining and improving SDF’s joint operational capabilities in case of defense of remote islands.

From the GSDF, approx. 320 personnel and two helicopters (AH-64D) of the Western Army and approx. 30 personnel and two helicopters (CH-47JA) of the Central Readiness Force participated in this exercise. Also, the MSDF dispatched destroyers (Hyuga and Ashigara), transport vessel (Kunisaki), and three on-board helicopters (SH-60K), while the U.S. Third Fleet and the U.S. 1st Marine Expeditionary Force took part from the U.S. Forces.

In the Camp Pendleton and San Clemente island in California, the U.S., as well as its surrounding waters and air space, the Japan-U.S. joint training was conducted. The training comprised a series of actions of amphibious mission, which included maritime maneuver, landing, deployment, securing area, and retreat from the area. The supply support for units operating amphibious mission was conducted as well.
