On March 9th, a delivery and commission ceremony was held for submarine Kokuryu at Kawasaki Heavy Industries Kobe Works and attended by Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Kenji Harada.

A delivery and commission ceremony involves raising the MSDF flag on the stern of a newly completed vessel at the shipyard to signify the changing of ownership to the Ministry of Defense. From the moment a newly commissioned vessel raises this flag it becomes a member of the MSDF fleet.

Destroyer Shirane Destroyer Shirane

When a vessel is decommissioned from the MSDF fleet after its service life is over, a ceremony is held where the MSDF flag is taken down and returned. Recently, the flag of destroyer Shirane was returned after the end of its approx. 35-year career, which included wide range of missions and demonstrations of its capabilities. This marked the retirement of this particular vessel from the MSDF fleet.
