Japan-U.S. Joint Reunion of Honor Ceremony on Island of Iwo-To

On March 21st, the annual reunion of honor ceremony was held under the joint auspices of the Iwo-To Association of Japan (ITAJ) and the Iwo Jima Association of America (IJAA). Marking the 70th anniversary of the battle on the island of Iwo-to, approx. 130 people from Japan side such as senior government officials including Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Yasuhisa Shiozaki, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Yasuhide Nakayama as well as members of the ITAJ attended the service. From the U.S. side, approx. 420 people including Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, General Joseph Dunford, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and members of the IJAA took part in the ceremony.

On this ceremony, Defense Minister paid his sincere condolences to the souls of those who devoted their lives for their own countries. He also mentioned that we continue efforts to pass on today’s peace and prosperity to future generations and to strengthen even more the ties between Japan and the U.S.
