On March 7th, a graduation ceremony of the National Defense Medical College (NDMC) was held for graduates of the Division of Medicine, NDMC. Completing their six years of student life, a total of 79 students including 16 female students were awarded degree certificates and diplomas. They recited doctor’s oath to show their resolve and determination as medical practitioner.

On March 22nd, a graduation ceremony of the National Defense Academy (NDA) was held for students in both undergraduate and graduate course. The NDA is the only academic institution for higher education to educate ground, maritime, and air SDF cadets in Japan. A total of 572 graduates including 28 international students received degree certificates and diplomas. Following the address by the President of NDA, admonitory remarks by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as well as Defense Minister Nakatani, and congratulatory speech by an honored guest, graduates marked an end to the ceremony with the traditional hat toss.

The 19th Tokyo Defense Forum

The 19th Tokyo Defense Forum

The MOD hosted the 19th Tokyo Defense Forum (TDF) from March 4th to 5th.

The TDF is an international conference organized annually by the MOD since 1996 for defense authorities in the Asia-Pacific region. The Director General for International Affairs, MOD, chaired the forum where senior officers of defense ministries and international organizations (director-general level or general-class) took part. Participants discuss various topics including national defense policies in order to enhance mutual understanding and transparency.

The subjects of two sessions in the TDF this year were "Enhancing Maritime Security" and "Synergy Among the Frameworks for Multilateral Cooperation." In the first session, participants shared views about challenges in the maritime security domain and discussed possibilities and measures for maritime cooperation. In the latter component, they discussed efficient and effective multinational cooperation frameworks, taking the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and ADMM-Plus for examples.

Dispatch of a Commander to the CTF 151

Dispatch of a Commander to the CTF 151

The MOD will dispatch a MSDF officer to be a commander of the Combined Task Force (CTF151). The CTF 151 is a multinational task force for counter-piracy operations. With SDF personnel serving as the CTF 151 commander, it enables Japan to facilitate coordination among units of countries involved and gather broader information on counter-piracy operations of other countries off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden.
