On December 31st, 2014, the Minister for Foreign Affairs officially consulted with the Defense Minister for cooperation of the SDF’s Search and Rescue (SAR) operation, based on the request from the Indonesian government for the SAR operation of the missing Indonesian Air Asia QZ8501.

In response to the consultation, the MOD dispatched the MSDF Maritime Vessel Unit to the surrounding waters of the Karimata Strait, consisting of two destroyers (JS Onami and JS Takanami) and three on-board helicopters. They were on their way home from the anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

Additionally, to carry out necessary coordination activity with the local government, the MOD organized a coordination center in Indonesia.

The Unit arrived in the surrounding sea areas on January 3rd, 2015, and subsequently engaged in the SAR operation retrieving four victims and belongings.

As a result of the coordination with the Indonesian government, considering overall progress of the searching operations, Indonesia did not request for a continued operation of the destroyers on January 9th. To that end, the Unit concluded its operation. The deepest gratitude and respect were expressed by the Indonesian government for the SDF activities.
