On December 24th, the third Abe Cabinet was assembled and Gen Nakatani, a member of the House of Representatives, was appointed as the 14th Minister of Defense.

At the press conference on the same day, new Defense Minister Nakatani stated, “Today, I was appointed to the posts of Defense Minister and Minister in charge of Security Legislation. As I start taking charge of the grave duty of ensuring the survival of Japan as well as the safety and security of the Japanese people, I feel great honor and a sense of tremendous responsibility at the same time. I served as director general of the Defense Agency 12 years ago. Since then, the security environment and situation surrounding Japan have drastically changed. However, since I used to serve in the SDF, my professional roots, I would like to fulfill this vital role while working together with the diligent SDF, officers, and the staff of the MOD.”

In the morning of December 25th, Defense Minister Nakatani attended the office at the MOD where he received a guard of honor and gave instructions to the staffs at the inauguration ceremony. In the afternoon, Defense Minister Nakatani took over duties from former Defense Minister Akinori Eto.
