Mt. Ontake in Nagano Prefecture erupted around noon on September 27th. Approx. two and a half hours later, the Governor of Nagano Prefecture made a request to the commander of the GSDF 13th Infantry Regiment for the dispatch of personnel to engage in life-saving activities.

Units consisting primarily of personnel from the GSDF Eastern Army and other units from the ASDF arrived at the area on and after September 27th. SDF personnel carried out search and rescue operations in close cooperation with related organizations including Police, Fire Department and municipalities even though their activities had to be halted from time to time due to volcanic gas, tremor, and rain.

The SDF rescued 23 people by helicopter hoist and other means, and transported 56 people in cardiopulmonary arrest since September 28th.

On October 16th in the evening, the SDF received a request for withdrawal and subsequently concluded its activity. A total of approx. 7,200 personnel, 1,800 vehicles, and 300 aircraft were sent to the disaster-hit area from the SDF to engage in the disaster relief activities.
