MOD/SDF 60th Anniversary Air Review 2014

On October 26th, the Air Review commemorating the 60th anniversary of the MOD/SDF was held at ASDF Hyakuri Base in Ibaraki Prefecture.

The ASDF made concerted efforts in cooperation with the GSDF and MSDF to carry out the Air Review, a ceremony to celebrate the SDF Day. It is a unique event unparalleled in any other countries. The purpose of the Air Review is to raise awareness of mission and morale among the SDF personnel through a review by the Prime Minister, and to enhance the public understanding and trust in the SDF by demonstrating the capabilities of the main body of air defense troops. The Defense Agency (which was later developed into the MOD in 2007) was established on July 1st in 1954. At the same time, ASDF was founded while the GSDF and MSDF developed out of the Peace Preservation Corps and the Coastal Safety Force respectively. The Air Review 2014 took place in the milestone 60th anniversary of the MOD/SDF establishment.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the reviewer of the ceremony, along with other senior officials including Defense Minister Akinori Eto and Chief of Air Staff, General Harukazu Saitoh attended this SDF’s grand affair, which showcased overwhelming presence of approx. 740 personnel, 25 vehicle, and 80 aircraft. In addition to various SDF aircraft, the Air Review put on a static display of MV-22 Osprey of U.S. Marine Corps as well as mock-up F-35A (model aircraft).
