Status of Scrambles through the First Half of FY2014

The ASDF scrambled 533 times during the first half of FY2014. It marked a major increase of 225 times compared to the same period of the previous year.

The breakdown by countries and regions was 61% against Russian aircraft, 38% against Chinese aircraft, and 1% against other aircraft although countries and regions include supposition.

Characteristics of Responses through the First Half of FY2014

The ASDF scrambled 324 times against Russian aircraft, a major increase of 188 times compared to the same period of the previous year. The MOD publicized 29 cases as a peculiar flight, including the long distance flight in the vicinity of Japan during the second quarter.

The ASDF scrambled 207 times against Chinese aircraft, increase of 58 times compared to the same period of the previous year.

There was no air intrusion during the first half of FY2014. Scrambles against Russian reconnaissance aircraft and Chinese fighter aircraft were outstanding in frequency compared to other types of aircraft of each country, although this includes estimation.

The period of this data is from April 1st, 2014 to September 30th, 2014.

FY2014 Overseas Training Squadron consisting of approx. 720 personnel boarding on TV “KASHIMA,” TV “SETOYUKI,” and DD “ASAGIRI” returned to Tokyo after 5 months long training since they departed on May 22nd this year. The Overseas Training Squadron is implemented for junior officers to apply the knowledge and skills in the field that they acquired at school and to help them be accustomed to the sea, developing the qualities that are required to be SDF officers. The overseas training cruise counted 58th times this year.

The 17th Incheon Asian Games

The 17th Incheon Asian Games

The 17th Asian Games was held in Incheon, Republic of Korea, from September 19th to October 4th. The Asian Games is held to deepen friendship and interaction between the countries of Asia through sports and build peace in the process.

A total of 23 personnel from the JSDF Physical Training School (Asaka, Saitama Prefecture) took part in the games and won medals in 10 items such as race walk, wrestling, swimming, modern pentathlon, boxing, rifle shooting, and so forth.
