Between August 30th and September 1st the MOD/SDF participated in comprehensive disaster preparedness drills across Japan in order to ensure the prompt and effective dispatch of SDF personnel in case of major earthquakes, as part of Disaster Preparedness Week (August 30th to September 5th).

Then Minister of Defense Onodera observed the joint disaster preparedness drill involving nine local governments held in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture on September 1st.

Disaster Relief for Life-saving Activities in Hiroshima Prefecture

On August 20th, major landslides resulting from torrential rains caused damage in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. At 6:30am that day, the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture made a request to the commander of the GSDF 13th Brigade for the dispatch of personnel for life-saving activities. On the same day, units consisting primarily of personnel from the GSDF 13th Brigade arrived at the area. SDF personnel carried out searching activities for the missing and supported the locals’ bathing needs in close cooperation with related organizations. On September 11th at 10:00pm, the SDF received a request for withdrawal and the units concluded its activity. A total of approx. 15,000 SDF personnel, 3,000 vehicles, and 70 aircraft were sent to the disaster-hit area during the disaster relief activity.
