The MOD/SDF participated in a multinational training exercise called Cobra Gold 14 in Thailand from February 11 to 21. Through its involvement in this exercise, the SDF sought to maintain and improve joint operations capabilities with regards to international peace cooperation activities and the transport of Japanese nationals overseas. SDF personnel have taken part in this joint training exercise since 2005 and this marks the 10th time.

The GSDF Western Army Infantry Regiment and other units commenced a joint field training exercise with the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton in the United States called Iron Fist on January 23. A total of 270 personnel from the SDF participated, including troops from the GSDF Western Army Infantry Regiment and other units.

The Iron Fist joint field training exercise has been held nine times since it began in 2005. The unique feature of this training exercise was the expanded scope of landing exercises using boats to maintain and improve the tactical and fighting skills necessary for island operations.
