Video Conference held between the MOD’s Political Executives and the SDF Engineer Unit in South Sudan

On January 30, Minister of Defense Onodera, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Wakamiya and Kihara held a video conference with the head of the SDF engineer unit in South Sudan, taking in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The political executives encouraged the SDF personnel on site.

At the video conference, the head of the engineer unit reported on the local situation after the cease fire agreement was reached between the South Sudan government and rebel forces on January 23 (local time) and on the activities of the SDF unit.

Based on the request from the UN, the engineer unit is currently working on various activities, such as site preparation for IDP camps, reinforcement of facilities used for safeguarding the UN compound, and provision of medical assistance.

The SDF will carry on its IDP assistance activities through close cooperation with the units from other countries and with due considerations to safety onsite.

Report from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

Six personnel from the GSDF Cold Weather Combat Training Unit (Sapporo, Hokkaido) competed in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics which ended on February 23. Participants included Second Lieutenant Keishin Yoshida in cross country and First Lieutenant Hidenori Isa, Sergeant First Class Miki Kobayashi, Sergeant Fuyuko Suzuki, Leading Private Rina Suzuki, and Leading Private Yuki Nakajima in biathlon.

Sergeant Suzuki ended in 32nd place in women’s 10km pursuit, which was her career-high ranking in the Winter Olympics. Second Lieutenant Yoshida played a vital role as a second runner in the men’s cross country relay.
