A1. As a result of Japan’s difficult fiscal situation in recent years, a majority in the general account budget has been allocated for social security expenditures, while defense expenditures have been curtailed.

Special Prize for DOGs

"Won-won-won!" Even in the dog world, its language, in fact their "cry" differs worldwide.

While celebrating the Self-Defense Force Memorial Day on November 1st, unique ceremony was held here at ASDF Iruma Air Base. An award ceremony for Dogs.

"Bow-wow" which is a common echoic sound for dogs, turns into "won-won-won" in Japanese, making the November 1st, representing triple one (won), for the day of dogs.

The MSDF and ASDF have equipped with some security dogs, about 300 dogs are guarding their own base respectively. Basically, they are treated as "equipment" among the forces. However, even after they retire from their duties, the security dogs will be welcomed as a member of family, and spend rest of their lives in the base with the unit team.

Surrounded by a number of medias, four of the dogs which represented the whole member received this special prize from the Director of Public Affairs on behalf of Defense Minister. Gigantic toy bone which was given as a supplementary prize especially delighted them.

Along with this event, searching and attack training by the honored dogs were exhibited, showing their powerfulness.
