Prime Minister Abe Visits Iwo To Base

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Iwo To (one of the islands belonging to Ogasawara Islands, Tokyo) on April 14, where he gave words of encouragement to the MSDF and ASDF personnel stationed on this isolated island and also received a briefing on the base’s activities.

Later, Mr.Abe attended the memorial service for war dead and viewed the site where human remains from World War II were found. Mr.Abe also observed a series of operations to search the underground vault from World War II by using radar on the surface, which is located directly underneath the base.

Prime Minister Abe Visits ASDF Matsushima Air Base

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Miyagi Prefecture on May 12 to observe the progress of the reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake. As part of this visit, he traveled to ASDF Matsushima Air Base (Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture) where he gave a speech thanking ASDF personnel for their efforts and contributions in the wake of the Earthquake. He also expressed his hope that the base would be quickly restored to normal, despite the many difficulties that still remain, and encouraged personnel to push forward with their duties.

Afterwards, Mr.Abe received a briefing from the commanding officer on the progress in repairing the base’s damages and equipment, and saw the Blue Impulse in actual flight.
