Conclusion of international peacekeeping operations in East Timor

The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) was scheduled to conclude on December 31, 2012. As the United Nations decided not to request for replacements for military liaison officers completing their term of duties after June 30, 2012, the two SDF personnel dispatched from Japan as the international peacekeeping units in East Timor completed their assignments on September 19 and returned to Japan.

Japan commenced the dispatch of international peacekeeping units to East Timor in September 2010. For two years, it has continued to send a total of eight SDF personnel on the mission as UNMIT military liaison officers, who had been contributing to UNMIT activities.

The MOD and the SDF will continue to put efforts into international peacekeeping operations, utilizing the experience gained through its involvement in UNMIT activities.
