On Thursday, 17 May, 2012, the former Defense Minister Tanaka met with visiting Australian Foreign Minister Carr at the Ministry of Defense, and exchanged opinions on cooperation in the area of security in both countries. During the meeting, Mr. Tanaka noted that progress had been made with regard to cooperation in various fields between Japan and Australia, which are both allies of the United States in the Pacific region, and said that he welcomed the conclusion of the recent Japan-Australia Information Security Agreement. He also said that he would make efforts on the effectuation of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA). Foreign Minister Carr noted that the importance of the developing Japan-Australia defense relations was evidenced by the fact that the Defense Minister of Japan was the first minister he was meeting with since his appointment as the Minister for Foreign Affairs. He also hoped that the next Japan-Australia �g2 plus 2�h meeting would be held as soon as possible.

Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister of Defense Shu Watanabe, Takes Overseas Trip

From April 28 to May 2, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister of Defense Shu Watanabe made his visit to Haiti and the United States. During the visit, he exchanged opinions with members of U.S. defense officials and the United Nations and observed the Japanese MINUSTAH unit.

Visit to Haiti

In addition to observing the activities of the Japanese MINUSTAH unit and encouraging the unit personnel, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Watanabe also met and exchanged opinions with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the Head of MINUSTAH, Mariano Fernandez.

Visit to Hawaii

Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Watanabe received a briefing on the situation at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) Kaneohe Bay from Commanding Officer of the MCBH, Colonel Annichiarico, and observed the base. He then exchanged opinions with Commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, Admiral Haney, at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and Commanding General of the United States Marine Corps Forces Pacific, Lieutenant-General Thiessen, at Camp H.M. Smith.

In the exchange of opinions, they talked about the deepening of the Japan-U.S. Alliance from a broad perspective, including adjustments to the plan on the realignment of U.S. forces in Japan and the unit composition of the U.S. Marine Corps.

From May 1 to May 4, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Mitsu Shimojo visited the Kingdom of Bahrain and met with Commander Fox of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, Commander-in-Chief of Bahrain Defense Force Khalifa, Bahrain�fs Minister of State for Defense Affairs Mohammed, and H.H. Khalid.

In the meeting with Bahrain�fs Commander-in-Chief and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Shimojo expressed to the Bahrain representatives his gratitude for concluding the memorandum of understanding on defense exchanges signed on April 11. The Bahrain representatives thanked him for his visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and showed the will to deepen the defense exchanges between Japan and Bahrain. Furthermore, both sides also concurred that with the conclusion of the memorandum of understanding, the exchange between the two countries will not be limited to the high-level exchanges and coming and going of training ships that have been carried out to date. Rather, both sides expressed the wish to deepen the exchange in a wide range of areas in the future, including working-level exchanges, exchanges between troops, as well as educational and training exchanges.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Hideo Jinpu, Takes Overseas Trip (Israel, Sweden, Norway)

From April 30 to May 4, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Hideo Jinpu visited Israel, Sweden, and Norway. During the visit, he exchanged opinions with members of the defense ministry and United Nations, and visited the Japanese UNDOF unit.

Visit to Israel

Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Jinpu paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ehud Barak, and they exchanged views on defense exchanges between Japan and Israel, and on the regional security situation. They agreed to ensure the continuance of active exchanges of opinions between the two countries. During the visit, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Jinpu also observed the activities of the Japanese UNDOF unit and encouraged unit personnel, and exchanged opinions with UNDOF Chief of Staff, Colonel Rotheneder.

Visit to Sweden

Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Jinpu visited the Swedish Defence Material Administration, Swedish Defence and Security Export Agency, and the Swedish Agency for Non-Proliferation and Export Controls, and exchanged opinions on arms export policies.

He also met with the State Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Hakan Jevrell. They concurred that it would be beneficial for the two countries, which play an active role in international peace cooperation activities, to make full use of opportunities and share opinions on regional security and global issues.

Visit to Norway

Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Jinpu paid a courtesy call on Minister of Defence, Espen Barth Eide. They agreed to enhance cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, including defense policies, through a series of exchanges of opinions. He also held a dialogue with State Secretary Roger Ingebrigtsen, and the two exchanged views on the security environment surrounding Japan and Norway, UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan, and the F-35 program, among other topics.
