On March 17, Defense Minister Tanaka visited the Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) Hyakuri Air Base in Omitama City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

The Minister observed the main aircrafts of the ASDF at the hangar and apron area, including the F-15 fighter, the F-4 fighter, and C-130 transport aircraft.

The Minister addressed approximately 900 air base personnel at the hangar. Touching on the importance of the aerial defense mission of the ASDF, the Minister stated that a record high 91.7% of the Japanese people have a favorable impression on the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) according to the latest public opinion survey. Regarding the security environment surrounding Japan, the Minister noted North Korea’s change in leadership in December 2011 and China’s sharp increase in defense spending and intensified activities in areas around Japan. At the same time, the Minister urged the need for the SDF to maintain a constant awareness about inherent dangers, to take seriously the mission each personnel was given with, and to further enhance SDF trainings.

Camp Tokushima was opened as the first camp since the opening of Camp Meguro in 1994, approximately 17 years ago, and the first camp to be established in Tokushima Prefecture.

Around 220 Self-Defense Force personnel will be stationed at this camp located in a premise of approximately 110,000m², including the 14th engineering unit that was relocated from Camp Kochi as well as a ground service unit.

On March 26, a completion ceremony was held with the attendance of the Governor of Tokushima Prefecture and others. At the ceremony, the head of the 14th Brigade presented the unit flag to the head of the 14th engineering unit. On March 31, an opening ceremony was held with the attendance of Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister of Defense Shu Watanabe, to which local stakeholders and others were invited.

Camp Tokushima is expected to respond to various situations, including the provision of disaster relief in Tokushima Prefecture.
