For two days on November 18 and 19, 2011 the Self-Defense Forces Marching Band Festival was held at the Nippon Budokan. Personnel exhibited the discipline and diligence of the SDF through musical and marching performances based on the theme “Love, Hope, and Courage, overcoming the present for future.”

The event that was held after the Great East Japan Earthquake was attended by the U.S. Army Japan, who carried out Operation Tomodachi together with the SDF, as well as the military band of the U.S. Marine Corps stationed in Okinawa and a civilian chorus from the affected areas. Moreover, a total of approximately 39,000 people attended the six performances of the two-day period, where messages of remembrance and reconstruction.

A special performance on November 19, 2011 was also attended by then Minister of Defense Ichikawa, former Minister of Defense Kitazawa, former Prime Minister Hatoyama, and others. Nearly 2,000 people related to the Great East Japan Earthquake, included disaster victims, were also invited to this special performance.
