JGSDF Personnel Dispatched to Bastille Day Ceremonial Parade in France

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) dispatched a marching unit to the Bastille Day (French National Day) Ceremonial parade that took place in France on July 14th.

This was aimed at reinforcing defense cooperation and exchanges between the two countries, as this year marks the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and France.

RIMPAC 2018

RIMPAC 2018

From June 27th to August 2nd, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the JGSDF participated in the multilateral joint exercise RIMPAC in Hawaii, southern California, and the surrounding seas. RIMPAC is one of the largest multilateral joint exercises in the world with a long-running history. This exercise is organized every two years by the U.S. Navy, and the JSDF has participated since 1980.

The JSDF conducted tactical exercises such as anti-submersible, anti-maritime anti-air warfares, and amphibious warfares as well as humanitarian assistance/disaster relief (HA/DR). The JGSDF also conducted its first joint anti-ship exercise with the U.S. Army and the JMSDF using the Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile system.

The JSDF improved the tactical capabilities in a wide range of fields, and enhanced relationship with the U.S. and other participating nations through this exercise.

The JSDF-USFJ Women’s Forum

On June 27th, the JSDF-U.S. Forces in Japan (USFJ) Women’s Forum was held at the MOD. This forum included a discussion on issues related to active engagement of female personnel and work-life balance with female personnel in the U.S. Forces.

The JSDF-USFJ Women’s Forum

The goal of this forum is to contribute to reviews of future measures for active engagement of female personnel at the MOD/JSDF. This marked the second time the forum was held, following the first one last year.

Status of Scrambles during the First Quarter of FY2018

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) fighter jets scrambled 271 times during the first quarter of FY2018, an increase of 42 times compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The breakdown of scrambles by country and region was about 64% against Chinese aircraft, about 35% against Russian aircraft, and about 1% against aircraft from other countries and regions. Countries and regions also include inferences.

Characteristics of Responses during the First Quarter of FY2018

The JASDF fighter jets scrambled 173 times against Chinese aircraft, an increase of 72 times compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. The JASDF fighter jets scrambled 95 times against Russian aircraft, a decrease of 30 times compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

During the first quarter of FY2018, 15 cases were made public as unusual flights.

A large number of scrambles were conducted against Chinese fighter jets and Russian reconnaissance aircrafts, including presumptions.
