Ceremony of the Release of a Portion of land at Makiminato Service Area and Transfer of former West Futenma Housing Area

On May 20th, ceremony of the release of a portion of land at Makiminato Service Area and transfer of former West Futenma Housing Area was held. It was attended by central and local government representatives including Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga, State Minister of Defense Yamamoto, Vice Governor of Okinawa Jahana, the Mayors of Ginowan and Urasoe City, as well as Maj. Gen. Chiarotti, the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Forces Japan.

The aim of this partial land return of Makiminato Service Area is to widen the National Route 58, which is a key traffic route in southern Okinawa. This project was outlined in the 1996 Special Action Committee on Okinawa (SACO) agreement and finally realized this time.

The transfered land of former West Futenma Housing Area is the first large-scale land return stipulated in the Consolidation Plan for Facilities and Areas in Okinawa, which was agreed with the U.S. under Abe administration.

This return and transfer of the land marks a significant step toward the mitigation of impact on Okinawa. The MOD continues to make its utmost efforts to realize the total return of Land Areas South of Kadena Air Base at the earliest possible date.
