MEETINGS WITH FOREIGN LEADERS
Defense Minister Ishiba met on February 7 with Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al Khalifa. Minister Ishiba stated: "We are very grateful to learn that we will receive continued support [from Bahrain] in connection with the resumption of replenishment operations in the Indian Ocean. It is our hope to continue efforts Japan can do for the sake of stability in the Middle East." The two ministers affirmed their intention of strengthening ties between the two countries' defense authorities.
 
MEETINGS WITH FOREIGN LEADERS
On February 26 Defense Minister Ishiba paid a courtesy call on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who was visiting Japan. Minister Ishiba indicated his positive interest in strengthening relations between Japan and Israel, saying, "I hope to consider what sorts of mutual cooperation will be possible between the two countries within the existing institutional framework, with regard to the exchange activities of both countries."
 
MEETINGS WITH FOREIGN LEADERS
General Tea Banh, deputy prime minister and minister of national defense of Cambodia, visited the Ministry of Defense on March 5 to hold the Japan-Cambodia Defense Ministerial Meeting with Defense Minister Ishiba. The two ministers discussed bilateral defense exchanges, including the acceptance of students from Cambodia at the National Defense Academy of Japan, the security situation in the region, including China and North Korea, and the two countries' defense policies.
