On August 30 Defense Minister Koumura held a Japan-China Defense Ministerial Meeting at the Ministry of Defense with General Cao Gangchuan, minister of national defense of China. In a cordial atmosphere they discussed a broad range of topics, such as regional and international security situations, national defense policies, and bilateral defense exchanges.
At the meeting the two ministers agreed that the minister of defense visit China next year (2008) and that the chief of staff of the Joint Staff Office and the Chinese chief of general staff mutually visit at the earliest convenient dates. They concurred that a Chinese Navy vessel should pay a port call to Japan in November or December, followed by a call of Maritime Self-Defense Force ships to China. The ministers also agreed to set up a joint working group to study the establishment of a communication mechanism between the two defense authorities to prevent the occurrence of unforeseen circumstances.
